Chapter TWENTY-ONE

That night, Jackie went through her regular workout routine. She preferred to exercise at home rather than at a sweaty, stinky gym with guys trying to look up her shorts. She did the last lunge and felt a twitch at the back of her leg. Lying on the mat, she stretched out her hamstring, the muscle tight and protesting. She was interrupted by the telephone. Gingerly, she stood and reached to answer.

“I have a call for Jackie from Aunt Sharon using the Telecommunications Relay Service. Have you used this service before?”

“Yes.”

“I will type whatever you say, so your aunt can read it on her TTY display. Please speak slowly and clearly. Do you have any questions?”

“No. Hello, Aunt Sharon. How are you doing? Stop.”

Jackie waited several moments and then the voice read, “I am fine. By the way, are you working at police now?”

Jackie sighed. Sharon repeated the same things every call. “Yes, I am working in Diamond Lake. I like it here very much. Will I see you at the birthday party at Uncle Jim’s house? Stop.”

Again, she waited. “No, I have new boyfriend, and we go, are going, to his family reunion. Why do you not call me?”

“I did not have your new number. I am glad about your boyfriend. Is he deaf, too? Did you meet him at work? Stop.”

She leaned back against the wall, stretching her shoulder.

“You can call your mom and get it. We meet at bowling alley. He deaf now but hearing little boy. His family not learn signing, and he hates not understand all lip words.”

Jackie couldn’t comprehend families that assumed the deaf person should just learn to read lips instead of trying to learn to sign. It was quite handy. She smiled at the pun. She grinned thinking of the night at the bar with Angie and her cousin. It sure surprised Angie that Jackie knew what the two of them were saying. “I will call Mom. Does Grandpa like him?”

“Ma’am?” the translator asked.

“Sorry, stop.”

“Yes, father like him much. You meet someone at work?”

Jackie hesitated. “Small office, so no. Still single. Stop.”

“You not wait too long be old maid like aunt. Laughing. I go take dog out walk. She does potty dance. Love you so much.”

Jackie was relieved it was a short call. “I love you, too. Kiss Snuggles for me. Bye. Stop.”

“Bye. End of translation.”

“Thank you very much.” Jackie hung up. Through the front window, she studied her lawn. It was still light out, and if she hurried, she could get the grass mowed before dark.

In the garage, she wheeled the new mower around and out the side door. With a snap, she pushed the lever to start and yanked the cord. The engine roared to life, belching a few puffs of blue smoke before it ran smoothly. Starting it with only one try was a rare event. She pushed the rumbling machine to the front yard and began a diagonal pattern opposite of what she followed the last time.
